Happy Grandparents Day!

Grandparents are important to children in so many ways. They have patience and time when parents are often busy. They have stories to tell and interesting games to play. They are also good for treats and spoiling, which we all need from time to time!

National Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day has been celebrated in America since the 1970s and now the day seems to be catching on in the UK too.

What better way to honour grandparents and show what a powerful influence they can be in our children's lives by sharing this very special story from a grandad and grandson who came to one of our shows.

The Boys' Road Trip

Earlier this year Guy lost his wife after a 17 year battle with cancer. “My two daughters lost a fantastic Mum, my 7-year-old Grandson lost his loving Grammy and I lost my soul mate and best friend.”

Her passing took its toll on the whole family. “Since this tragic event, my Grandson Evan and I have started going on Boy’s Road Trips every other week. This is so important for Evan because the loss of his Grammy has had such a traumatic effect on him. Our Road Trips are our way of remembering Grammy and being able to talk about things.”

Their visit to see Circus Starr became a very special “road trip” after receiving tickets through the counselling team at St Richard’s Hospice. Circus Starr has worked closely with hospices over the last 30 years to offer children learning to cope with grief an escape to the circus to make magical, new memories.

Guy and Evan remember their time spent in the Big Top with great fondness:

“Within the first minute of arriving at the Circus, the excitement and enjoyment began. Every single member of the staff was incredible. They could not do enough for you.

The acts were amazing. Watching all the other children and their families, friends and helpers I could see their smiles and laughter which is the whole idea of you bringing joy to all.

We truthfully did not want to leave! We’d like to thank you for the wonderful new memories.”

We'd also like to say a special thank you to Michelle Morris who captured the stunning photographs of Guy & Evan during a mini farm shoot at her beautiful homestead in the rolling hills of the Worcestershire countryside.
