We met 13-year-old Reuben at our show in Croydon which took place as Covid restrictions began to ease.

He enjoys swimming and playing on his iPad! Reuben is non verbal and is autistic which means his mum, Alison, often struggles to find SEN friendly events that the family can enjoy together.

‘As Reuben has hit puberty and we have had the restrictions of Covid-19 we have been met with aggressive behaviour from Reuben as he becomes more and more frustrated not been able to convey what he wants to say. When we found out about Circus Starr we thought we would give it a go, worst case scenario we would sit at the back and leave.’

Together with Reubens sibling and father, Alison was happy to find that there was no need to leave our show.

‘We all said that it was brilliant to see Reuben smiling and jumping up and down whilst not been judged. This is often the case, especially now he is 5’6.’

She also noted how our accessible performances like ours are needed for those with additional needs.

‘Without such events for those with special educational needs we know that our child would never have experienced seeing a circus. An every day one would be too stressful for us as a family as Reuben might not sit still, or he may jump and make noise throughout the show.’

Children like Reuben are able to experience a circus in an inclusive environment thanks to businesses making kind contributions. Alison was grateful to those who supported our cause.

‘We would like that thank the businesses that support Circus Starr for giving our son the opportunity to see such an event for free.’
